Torah Scroll case. [North Africa? Near East?, early 20th century]. Velvet, golden thread embroidery and sequins, wood, nails. Round case for a Torah Scroll (no parchment), made of wood, covered with purple velvet and on the inside covered with a floral cotton fabric. Velvet is adorned with golden embroidery with two frames in vegetal patterns; in the center is a vegetal decoration surrounded by stars and Hamsas. The Hamsa on the upper part turns downwards and the Hamsa on the lower part turns upwards. The fabric cover was fixed over an earlier cover which most probably was damaged. Height: 55 cm, diameter: 30 cm. Fair-good condition. Velvet in fair-poor condition.

A fabric decoration for a Torah Scroll case. [North Africa?], [1912/1913]. Cotton, golden-thread embroidery. Decoration made of light blue fabric, with embroidery in golden threads. A round vegetal pattern ornamentation in the center, and some other ornamentations on the four corners. A dedication is embroidered along the margins: “This kerchief in memory of… Yosef Yitzchak Yosef Sa’id… 1913…”. 60X57 cm. Fair condition. Faded fabric. Unraveled threads to margins and to embroidery.

Below the dedication – ornamentation of a ribbon and two branches. Fringes and a golden ribbon all around. The inscription (in illegible letters) reads: “…a splendid Mappa in honor of a Torah / …donation… / Maliha Halimi… / Raphael and… / Avraham Halimi…”. Length: 68 cm. Width: 120 cm. Fair condition. Decorative textile for a Torah Scroll case. Iraq or Persia, first half of 20th century. Velvet; silver thread embroidery. A Star of David in the center, surrounded by a circle with the word “Zion” within it. Within the star and next to the angles of the star appear the embroidered letters “Magen David”. Embroidery covers all of the surface in a square geometric pattern with large flowers on the margins and in the corners. Silver fringes at the sides. Length: 46 cm, width: 143 cm. Fair condition. The upper part is cut off. The embroidery and cloth are in very good condition; inner lining is stained.

Torah mantle. Tangier, Morocco, 1900. Velvet, golden thread, cardboard. Typical mantle, widening downwards. Made of two embroidered-velvet parts, with an opening in front. Embroidery surrounds the two round openings for the Atzei Chayim. Mantle is made of Burgundy colored velvet and adorned with rich embroidery in golden threads. An embroidery-ribbon around the borders, with fringes, embroidered in a dense vegetal pattern. The background pattern is of vegetal motifs with birds. Embroidered on the reverse: “…in memory of Yakut…1900”. A stylized wreath with two birds in it appears below the dedication. Length: 82 cm, max. width: 45 cm. Fair condition. Torah mantle. Spanish Morocco, 1906. Velvet, golden-threads embroidery. A typical mantle, widening downwards. Made of two embroidered velvet parts, with an opening in front. The parts of the mantle are named “Kisui” and “Glima”. The embroidery surrounds the two openings for the two Atzei Chayim. The mantle is made of black velvet richly embroidered in golden threads. Around the margins – an embroidery ribbon with a dense pattern. Embroidery pattern inside is sparse with floral motifs and birds. On the reverse, on the upper part, a dedication: “A Mappah… dedicated by Avraham Zarfati… in memory of his mother… 1906”. A round pattern of wreaths and birds below the dedication. Length: 82 cm, max. width: 48 cm. Good-fair condition. Some unraveled stitches, worn velvet. Torah mantle. Morocco, [early 20th century]. Velvet, golden embroidery, wood. Mantle consists of a cape with a stiff rectangular cover with two openings for Atzei Chayim. Mantle is made of purple velvet with golden fringes at the edges. Floral embroidery, dense at the edges and sparse towards the center. A dedication on the reverse, within an embroidered frame, surrounded by an embroidered vegetal pattern: “….David Abécassis…in memory of his wife…”. A purple thread is laced on the upper part – this thread was intended for hanging the mantle on the wall or from the ceiling for good luck on special life-cycle occasions such as Brith Milah or other ceremonies.
