"Certificate for change of name" – Printed certificate of the Population Registry office, completed by typewriter and signed by a clerk - for changing the name of "Popka David" to "Avraham David Elyashiv" and the name of his wife to "Chaya Musa Elyashiv". Jerusalem, 1932. Rabbi Avraham Elyashiv (1878-1943), was the Rabbi of Gomel, son of Rabbi Moshe Levinson from the city of Varėna. At one point, he was forced to change his family name to Popka (Popkin), [apparently he needed to use a fictitious passport of a Jew by the name of “David ben Yehuda Simcha Popkin”] and as the matter became complicated with the authorities, he was forced to change his first name to “Avraham David ben Rabbi Yehuda Simcha”. After he immigrated to Eretz Israel, he changed his family name to Elyashiv like the name of his Kabbalist father-in-law, author of the Leshem, Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv. Interestingly, on this official certificate, Rabbi Avraham listed his official name as “Avraham David” although his name was only Avraham [see the title page of his book Bikurei Avraham, Warsaw 1897 and Jerusalem 1924. Also on his tombstone only the name Rabbi Avraham ben Rabbi Moshe is written]. His only son was Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012), a leading posek of our generation. Leaf, 32.5 cm. Good condition.

Jerusalem, Kislev 1931. The certificate was completed in the handwriting of the Rabbi of Gomel, Rabbi Avraham, father of Rabbi Y.S. Elyashiv, who writes the name of the father and mother "Avraham David – Chaya Musha Elyashiv" [his official name "Avraham David" and not his real name – See previous item]. Leaf, 29.5 cm. Letter of rabbinical semicha, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, to Rabbi Avraham Elyashiv. Bauska, Chanuka 1903. "I find it my obligation to to announce the greatness of… the Rabbi, excellent in his sharpness and proficiency and full of fear of G-d… overflowing with knowledge of Torah, Talmud and Poskim Rishonim and Achronim… ". This copy of the letter has corrections in the handwriting of Rabbi Kook who added the fictitious name of Rabbi Avraham Elyashiv. The Rabbi of Gomel, Rabbi Avraham [father of Rabbi Y.S. Elyashiv] was the son of Rabbi Moshe Levinson from the city of Varėna. At one point, he was forced to change his family name to Popka (Popkin), [apparently he needed to use a fictitious passport of a Jew by the name of David ben Yehuda Simcha Popkin] and as the matter became complex with the authorities, he was forced to change his first name also to "Avraham David ben Rabbi Yehuda Simcha". After he immigrated to Eretz Israel, he changed his family name to Elyashiv like the name of his Kabbalist father-in-law, author of the Leshem, Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv [see Item 291]. In this letter, Rabbi Kook evidently first wrote the real name of Rabbi Avraham: "My Teacher, Rabbi Avraham son of R' Moshe" and then on second thought changed the name to his official name "David Avraham son of R' Yehuda Simcha" erasing the words "My Teacher Rabbi" and the word "Moshe". Leaf, 20.5 cm. Approximately 18 handwritten lines. Fair condition, wear damages to paper folds, restored with paper filling.

Letter (unsigned) in the handwriting of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook calling to join the Tiferet Bachurim Society in Jerusalem. [C. 1920s-1930s]. The Tiferet Bachurim Society in Jerusalem was founded in 1925 by the Rabbi of Gomel, Rabbi Avraham Elyashiv (1878-1943), who immigrated to Jerusalem together with his father-in-law author of the Leshem. The objective of the society was to gather tradesmen and craftsmen in Jerusalem for Torah studies, discourses and lessons in religious observance. Rabbi Avraham's illustrious father-in-law Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv, author of the Leshem and his disciple Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, the Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel, encouraged and supported this enterprise. The relationship between Rabbi Kook and Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv, author of the Leshem and his son-in-law Rabbi Avraham began in their days in Lithuania at the time Rabbi Kook studied Kabbalah from the Leshem. In 1904, Rabbi Kook [who then served as Av Beit Din of Bauska] ordained Rabbi Avraham with Semichat Chachamim [see Lot 293]. In the 1920s, Rabbi Kook obtained an immigration certificate for the Leshem and his family and when they arrived in Jerusalem, Rabbi Kook came many times to bask in the Leshem's greatness and the Leshem in turn honored Rabbi Kook greatly. From this document, we can learn that Rabbi Kook, too, supported the establishment of Tiferet Bachurim headed by Rabbi Avraham Elyashiv, the Rabbi of Gomel. Leaf, 11X16.5 cm. Approximately 11 handwritten lines. Good condition.
