"Jews in Czechoslovak Recruitment". Three handwritten leaves - memoires of a visit to Czechoslovakia, in the days before and after the signing of the "Munich Agreement" in September 1938. [ca. 1941]. Hebrew.
Through three leaves the writer describes a visit to a Czechoslovak village, near the Hungarian border, in 1938 - the declaration of a general draft taken by Czechoslovakia following Hitler's demand to annex Sudetenland, the induction of Jews to fight the Nazis, as well as the disappointment of Jewish soldiers with the "Munich Agreement" between France, Britain, Italy and Germany, which determined the annexation of the Sudetenland to Germany.
The writer describes the recruitment of Jewish soldiers to the army and its influence on the Jewish community: "The recruitment order hit the Jews even harder. In the mentioned neighborhood the number of Jews is significant and they are all orthodox and are afraid to desecrate the Sabbath but by order they must leave at once… …"
The writer continues to describe the willingness of Jews to fight the Germans and cites Jewish soldiers. "A Jew with a long beard…32 years old, a Shochet and Bodek in a town near Munkacs: it is hard to leave my family - he said - but I am relieved since I know that we will defeat Hitler's angels of destruction ….". Finally the writer describes the despair and disappointment of Jews with the decision to annex the Sudetenland to Germany. [3] leaves (three written pages), 23.5 cm. Good condition. Folding marks and creases. Stains and damp staining. Several tears (some with damage to text).

Majdanek [Maydanek - A Destruction Camp], by Zinowij Tolkaczew [Zinowii Tolkatchev]. Warsaw: Czytelnik, 1945. Polish, Russian, English and French.
Limited edition, numbered portfolio (600 copies) containing 28 plates after paintings by Tolkatchev. The paintings were created after Tolkatchev participated in July 1944 in the liberation of the Maydanek extermination camp as a Red Army soldier.
Tolkatchev was a Russian artist who enlisted in the Red Army in 1941. In 1944, he was stationed on the Ukrainian front, near Majdanek. Horrified by what he witnessed, Tolkatchev spent a month painting scenes from within the newly liberated death camp. A member of the Polish-Soviet Nazi Crimes Investigation Commission supported Tolkatchev’s work and in November 1944, his exhibition of Majdanek paintings became one of the earliest artistic depictions to document publicly the Nazi death camps. When this portfolio was published soon after, in February 1945, the Polish Government sent copies to Allied Forces heads of states and government and military officers. Looking back on his work, Tolkatchev wrote, “I did what I had to do; I couldn’t refrain from doing it. My heart commanded, my conscience demanded.” Today these paintings are in the collection of the Yad Vashem Museum in Jerusalem. [4], [8], [1] pp + 28 plates, 36X26cm. Good condition. Minor wear to the edges of some leaves. Stains and tears at margins of first few leaves (title pages and introductions). Professionally restored tears to first two leaves. Lacking the portfolio cover. Enclosed in a custom cloth-covered clamshell case.

12 Puvodnich Litografii Z Nemeckych Koncentracnich Taboru [a dozen original lithographs from German concentration camps] by Leo Haas. Published by Vydal Svaz Ozvobozených Politických Vězňů a Pozůstalých Po Politických Vězních [Union of liberated political prisoners]. Prague, 1947.
A dozen lithographs portraying German extermination camps by the artist Leo Haas; accompanied by a booklet with an introduction and texts for each lithograph (English, Russian, Czech and French). The artist's signature, in pencil, appears on the title page.
Leo Haas (1901-1983), was born in Opava, Czechoslovakia. Studied art in the Karlsruhe Academy and in Berlin and worked as an illustrator for newspapers and periodicals in Vienna. In 1926 he returned to his hometown, and shortly afterwards became famous for his portraits. In 1937, following the first pogrom in Opava, his art was declared as "degenerate art" and he was accused of "cultural Bolshevism" because his drawings appeared in a workers' newspaper. After thr Crystal Night he moved to Ostrava. In October 1939 Haas was sent to Nisko labor camp. While in the camp, he painted portraits of SS soldiers and of the supervisors, in return for more food and art supplies. His paintings, documenting the construction of the camp and the prisoners, survived and constitute a rare and important document of the period. When the labor camp in Nisko was dismantled, he returned to Ostrava; later he was sent to the Terezin Ghetto. In Terezin Haas was a member of the technical-graphic department, together with Otto Unger, Bedrich Fritta and other artists. In 1944, when the Ghetto painters were investigated as to their ties with illegal organizations and with elements outside the Ghetto, he was accused of distribution of propaganda and sent to Auschwitz. For several months Haas was moved from camp to camp. Finally he was sent to Ebensee concentration camp which was liberated by the American Army in 1945. After the war Haas returned to Terezin and to other venues where he lived, and succeeded in locating his paintings. For the rest of his life, Haas was committed to the documentation of crimes he witnessed. For additional information about Haas - see enclosed material. 12 leaves - lithographs, 48X34 cm. + [1] folded sheet. No folder. Good condition. Slightly stained and damaged.
