Ydele verwachtinge der Joden Getoont in den Persoon van Sabethai Zevi, Haren laetsten vermeynden Messias: Ofte Historisch Verhael van't geneten tijde sijner opwerpinge in't Ottomannisch Rijck onder de Joden aldaer voorgevallen is, en sijn Val [Vain Hopes of the Jews as Revealed in the Figure of Sabbatai Zevi…] by Thomas Coenen. Amsterdam: Joannes van den Bergh, 1669. Dutch and some Hebrew.
An important, detailed account of the rise of the messianic movement of Sabbatai Zevi, in "real time", while events took place or shortly afterwards. The author, Thomas Coenen, was a Protestant minister serving the Dutch merchant community in Izmir, where he witnessed Zevi's achievements. Coenen, who was very knowledgeable with regards to Judaism and Christianity, wrote with much disrespect for the Sabbatean movement and criticized it. Despite that, the book constitutes a reliable information source (the meticulousness of his study is evident in the fact that he provided the original Hebrew texts of various documents and letters). The book served as a historic information source for many scholars including Gershom Scholem (his study "Sabbatai Zevi and the Sabbatean Movement" is to a great extent based on Coenen's writings).
Originally the book contains two engravings - portraits of Sabbatai Zevi and Nathan of Gaza. This copy lacks both engravings, and they are replaced by photocopies.
According to K. Heeringa, (Bronnen tot de Geschiedenis van de Levantschen Handel) only 25 copies of Coenen's work were issued exclusively for the officers of the Levant Trading company. [16] pp ([2] leaves replaced by photocopies), 140, [1] pp, 15.5 cm. Good condition. Minor damages. Fine parchment binding, slightly damaged.
