Attractive copy in good condition. The original was printed without a title page. The first page is blank. Text begins on second page with the printed introduction of the Mechokek from the 22nd of MarCheshvan 1485, "Here in the city of Soncino". Opening words "Lama" and "Yedi'at" are ornamented.
Leaves [57-58] were torn from most copies due to the Christian censor. In this copy, these leaves exist in their entirety [see Bibliography Institute CD Listing 0109905].
Two colophons at end of book. The first has the date of the end of printing: "And its completion was here in Soncino in the province of Lombardy…on the 21st of the month of Tevet in the year Five Thousand Two Hundred and Forty from creation…". The second colophon is from "The servant disciple who worked on the book" who signs his name with the phrase [this is the source of its fame]: "From Zion comes forth Torah and G-d's word from Soncino".
Good condition. [108] leaves, 14 booklets: Booklets 1-2 of 8 leaves, Booklet 3 of 6 leaves, 4-13 of 8 leaves, 14 of 6 leaves. 27 cm. Good condition, stains (most leaves are clean), wide margins. Professionally restored tears to the first two leaves and to last leaf. Restored corners to several leaves [three leaves are damaged in the corner of the text]. A number of censorship erasing. New handsome leather binding, with gilt impression.

Title page larger than rest of book and folded on margins. On reverse side, Menorah-shaped poem printed [with heading: “Pure gold Menorah, in praise of Sefer Torah Ohr”]. Despite that which is stated on title page, the book consists of 79 chapters, and not 78, since two chapters are marked 35. Last page contains “witticism on value and virtue of composition” written by Rabbi Azarya Min Ha’Adumim.
According to introduction of author, this composition is the first section of three “pillars” which were named: “Torah Ohr”, “Derech Chaim” and “Ner Mitzvah”. Regarding the whereabouts of the other two sections the author’s son, Rabbi Gedalya Ibn Yichye, relates in his book “Shalshelet HaKabbalah”: “Sefer Derech Chaim… and Sefer Ner Mitzvah… were burnt in Padua in 1553… and only a small portion of them remained”.

The author, Rabbi David Vital (amongst the Jews expelled from Spain and a rabbi in Italy, son-in-law of the Mahardach of Corfu), based his work on a poem of 620 words [the numerical value of the word Keter in Hebrew], and each word hints to another mitzvah of the 613 mitzvot and of the seven Rabbinic mitzvot. The acrostic (acronym of the poem) is composed of the letters of the full version of the Ten Commandments. Most of the book is an explanation of the hints in the poem with laws and novellae on each mitzvah.
The book has more poems by the author. Also printed are illustrations of "hands" for calculating the tekufot and an illustration of the innards of an animal [for laws of treifot].

Sefer Halachot Gedolot, composed during period of the Ge’onim, is among the earliest Halacha books written following the completion of the Talmud. The identity of its author [known as: Behag = author of Halachot Gedolot] was controversial among scholars of the Rishonim who numerously cite him. Some ascribed the composition to Rabbi Yehudai Ga’on and others ascribed it to Rabbi Shimon Keira (for additional information see introduction to Rosh Traub edition, Warsaw 1875; introduction to edition of Rabbi Ezriel Hildesheimer, Berlin 1888; and Bibliography Institute CD, record no. 0127157). This is the first edition in print.

Sefer “Kol Bo”, collection of Halacha [Jewish law] and customs from period of Rishonim.
On title page of book ownership notation in old handwriting: “How sweet are thy words unto my taste” (based on Psalm 119). Above and beneath letters, added dots indicating name of author. Dots above letters form the name ‘Mordechai’ whereas dots beneath the letters form the name ‘Modl’ (Mottl’; nickname in Germany for name Mordechai).
Last leaf contains family records (deaths and births) between years 1649-1651, and more recent records (from writer of Goldstein family), from years 1859-1905.
