Printed letter of gratitude sent by the representatives of the Vilnius Jewish Congregation to Vasily Alexievitch [Maklakov], lawyer in the Beilis trial. Vilnius, 1914. Russian.
Menachem Mendel Beilis was accused of murder in April 1911 of an Ukrainian Christian boy by the name of Andrei Yuschinhinsky in order to use his blood for the preparation of Matzot for Passover. A false testimony led to Beilis arrest. His trial started in September 1914. On the background of the trial an incitement campaign was organized against the Jews. After three years in prison Beilis was acquitted. Vasily Alexievitch Maklakov was one of the defense attorneys. This letter, of 1914, expresses the gratitude of the Vilnius Jewish congregation to Maklakov for defending "law and truth and the honor of the Jewish People and of Russia during these sad times, when people full of hatred spread libels against Jews". 44.5 cm, sheet folded into two and printed on one page only. Good condition. Staining, folding-marks, tears at margin.

Poster concerning the Transfer Agreement, signed in 1933 between Nazi Germany and the Jewish Agency, aimed at transferring the possessions and capital of German Jews to Eretz Israel. The Transfer Agreement led to an extreme conflict in the Jewish Yishuv and in the Diaspora, mainly around the moral question of negotiating with the Nazis and the economic profits stemming from this agreement. On one side of the barricade stood the Mapai Party that controlled the Jewish Agency and let the agreement and on the other side stood the Revisionist Movement that opposed unequivocally to this agreement.
"The Zionist Congress in Luzerne confirmed the Transfer. Irresponsible party members are trying to turn the agreement into a means for a political war. Eretz Israel is the only hope of German Jews and the transfer is their only last bridge. Does the tragedy of German Jews have to serve as a means for the Revisionists who excluded themselves from the Zionist Congress? Jews! Do you wish to assist them and sacrifice German Jews!.... therefore, no responsible and disciplined Zionist should participate in the referendum about the 'Transfer'. Prove you practical consideration and political maturity". 61X92 cm. Good condition. Staining. Tears, some restored. Linen-backed for display and conservation.
