Envelope with a "Do'ar Ivri" stamp, value 10 Mils, and a postal stamp from Ramat-Gan of May 16 1948. On the left side appear an illustration and a text noting the Declaration of the State of Israel "Independence Day 15.5.1948"; on the upper part of the envelope is an illustration with the Flag of Israel and the writing "First Day".
The envelope is hand-signed by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and some Ministers and members of the first Knesset: Eliezer Kaplan (deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance), Moshe Shertok (Foreign Minister), David Remez (Transportation Minister), Aharon Zisling, Bechor-Shalom Shitrit (Police Minister), Mordechai Bentov, Felix Rosenblit (=Pinchas Rosen, Justice Minister), Haim Moshe Shapira (Minister of Interior, Health and Aliyah), Peretz (Fritz) Bernstein and Yitzchak Greenboim (Member of the Provisional State Council and Minister of Interior of the Provisional Government of Israel). A large-scale collection of documents from the archive of Gershon Rivlin, 1940-s until the 1990-s (most of the documents are from the 60-s-70-s).
Gershon Rivlin (1914-1994), historian, author, editor and lecturer was born in Dvinsk. Rivlin immigrated to Israel with his parents when he was seven years old. His family settled in Ramat Gan and managed an agricultural farm. His father, Zalman Rivlin, was an educator and member of Ramat Gan's first council. In the times before the establishment of the State of Israel, Rivlin joined the Haganah, was active in publishing underground newspapers and operating an underground radio station, and was considered an expert on the underground movements in the time of the British Mandate. In 1940, he became the first editor of the IDF newspaper Ma'archot. Rivlin served in the Haganah and in the IDF for over 30 years and reached the rank of Colonel. After his retirement in 1972, he became a senior editor of the Am Oved publishing company. Later, he was a senior lecturer of the History of Eretz Yisrael in Ben Gurion University, a researcher in the Institute for Study of the Underground movements in Bar Ilan University, a member of the board of directors of the Eretz Yisrael Museum etc. Rivlin wrote and edited dozens of books, including David Ben Gurion's diary and a book on the history of the Haganah.
This collection is composed of thousands of documents including: *Many letters to and from Rivlin with letters signed by Shimon Peres, Yitzchak Rabin, Rechavam Ze'evi, and others. *Official letters and documents from the time his father served as member of the Ramat Gan council. *Hundreds of drafts of lectures and articles and research material that Rivlin compiled for writing; most deal with the history of Eretz Yisrael, particularly the underground movements. *Poems, lists and articles handwritten and typewritten. *Newspaper clippings and interviews with Rivlin *Leaflets of The Organization of Haganah Members in Israel. Various pamphlets and books that Rivlin took part in publishing. *Photographs from the film Cast a Giant Shadow, based on the biography of Colonel David Marcus (Mickey Stone), with John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, Frank Sinatra, Chaim Topol and others. Collection of letters and documents from the estate of Menachem Rivlin (1903-1983). Rivlin was born in Bendery, Tighina, Moldova, former Serbia. Was an underground Zionist activist with Prof. Bichovsky in the headquaters of the Zionist Organization. Being fluent in Hebrew he was appointed by Nahum Zemach, the director of "Habima", as his personal secretary. Rivlin was sent in 1922 on a trip to enhance the activity of the Zionist Organization chapters in central Russia and the Volga province and in 1923 made Aliya to Eretz Israel. Rivlin was involved, for many years, with "Magen", a society acting for Prisoners of Zion in Israel and abroad. One of the founders and secretary of "Hevel Yami Le-Israel". Wrote for "HaPoel HaTza'ir" paper and dealt with literature, editing and translation. For additional information see attached material.

1. Latroun Battles (25.5.1948 -11.6.1948) (primary drawings from a book about the War of Independence), by lieutenant colonel I. Bar. [1955]. Booklet about the Latroun battles. On the title-page there's a dedication handwritten by Bar, in German, to Gershon Rivlin. 7-94 pp, 24 cm. Good condition.
2. Copy of a composition handwritten by Gershon Rivlin about his encounters and his acquaintance with Israel Bar. The composition is addressed to Yehuda Koren. Good condition.
Israel Bar (1912-1966) was a "Haganah" member. Upon the establishment of IDF he was appointed as one of two assistants to the Operations Branch Commander and the deputy Chief of Staff. Served as head of the Projects Department of the Operations Branch and as head of the Security Department. Bar was arrested in March 1961 and accused of espionage for the Soviets. Was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Bar appealed and his imprisonment was changed to 15 years. Bar died in prison of a heart attack in May 1966.

Collection of letters and documents from the estate of Shaul Avigur (1899-1978). Avigur (Meirov) was one of Tel-Hai fighters, one of the "Haganah" leaders, commander of the Mossad LeAliya Beth organization during most of its existence, Deputy Minister of Defense during the 1948 war and head of "Nativ – Lishkat Hakesher" (that maintained contact with Jews in the Soviet Union) in the 1950s-60s. Avigur was instrumental in forming SHAI (the intelligence wing of the Hagganah which preceeded the Intelligence Services of the State of Israel and acquired arms for the Hagganah and for IDF). Avigur's sister, Zipora, was married to Moshe Sharet (whose sisters were married to Dov Hoz and Eliyahu Golomb). Avigur, Hoz, Golomb and Sharet were referred to as "The Four Brothers-in- Law" and were of the Hagganah leaders. It was often said that the Yishuv existed due to "Miracles and the four brothers-in-law".
