Manuscript Padah Et Avraham, responsa and novellae, sermons and piyutim, by Rabbi Refael Avraham Kalphon, an eminent Rabbi of Tiberias and Haifa, (1864-1886).
Autographic writing by the author, in handsome Oriental writing, with many additions on the sheets and between the lines. Many author's signatures, some full signatures but most pseudonyms.
~ Letters of responsa sent to various rabbis: Rabbi Menashe Sethon whom he met traveling to Beirut; Rabbi "Yissa Bracha" [apparently, his friend Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Abulafia – a Tiberias Torah scholar, who left a manuscript by that name]. On Leaf 15/2, a section appears in different handwriting starting with the words of "Ish" and at the end, the author writes "These are the words of Rabbi Nehorai 'Ish Kilvavi' and he correctly understood…". Several letters by Rabbi Yosef Shmuel Abulafia are also copied on this manuscript; letters to the Rabbi "Mevin Chochma" [Rabbi Moshe, also a Tiberias rabbi who at that time was an emissary to a different country]; another handwritten halachic query and response signed with a pseudonym, etc.
~ Responsa by Western Torah scholars: Rabbi Yeshua Basis, Rabbi Chai Taib, his uncle Rabbi Moshe HaLevi [he notes that he is copying a responsum from a manuscript that he found while staying by Moharitz Ebn Valid – from my uncle Rabbi Moshe HaLevi].
~ Several piyutim which he wrote, with the acronym of his name Refael Avraham. A piyut for a brit milah and in honor of Rabbi Meir Ba'al HaNess, written at the dedication of the building erected over his grave in 1868 – [This piyut was printed in his name in the book "Meir Bat Ayin" (Tunis 1899), but with many differences, see attached photocopy].
Rabbi Avraham Refael Kalphon (1820-1886), a Rabbi of Tituan (Spanish Morocco), immigrated to Tiberias in 1860 and served there as Rosh Yeshiva and dayan. Traveled to Beirut and Istanbul as an emissary and was a leading force behind the aliya movement of Moroccan Jews to Sefad, Haifa and Tiberias. Served for a while as chief Rabbi in Tiberias, but in 1883 moved to Haifa, where he was appointed Head of the Beit Din. His novellae were never printed and remained in manuscript form: Padah et Avraham, and Me'at Ochel on Mishlei and V'Achal V'Chai L'Olam on Tehillim (mentioned in this manuscript, with note of page in manuscript). His son Rabbi Moshe was son-in-law of his renowned disciple Rabbi Refael Ebn Naim, Rabbi of Gibraltar.
Volume of 300 leaves, 150 of them closely written. 20 cm. Varied condition, good to fair, wear and moth damage. Worn binding. Written on leather spine, Padah et Avraham. Includes handwritten sermon of the dedication of the Beit HaKnesset and school in Tiberias in the beginning of the 20th century found between the book leaves. 5 pages, 25 cm. Good-fair condition, tears to paper folds.
