Collection of approximately two hundred leaves of study and analysis of foreign expressions in Rashiג€™s commentary, by Arsene Darmesteter. France, late 19th century. French. Many handwritten lists, which include analysis of words and sentences in Hebrew from the Jewish holy and literary sources. Including: Printed report of summary of research which was performed mainly in libraries in Britain (an additional copy of the report contains handwritten comments on margins, however it is missing four pages); six handwritten letters by various researchers who discuss the study; additional material.
Darmesteter (1846-1888) - researcher of ancient French and philologist in Lisbon Sorbonne, introduced new linguistic theories and ascribed importance to the understanding of foreign expressions used by Rashi. The book he wrote on this topic was a breakthrough in the understanding of Rashiג€™s methods for his commentary. Composed additional books in linguistics, and in the last years some of his new editions were published in French and Hebrew (Otzar HaLeג€™azim, French words in Rashiג€™s commentary on the Talmud as published by Arsene Darmesteter and David Shimon in Lundheimג€. Translated into Hebrew and arranged with commentaries and completions, with the addition of indexes, by Moshe Katan). This collection demonstrates Darmesteterג€™s thorough and comprehensive research study. Approx. two hundred pp, varying sizes. Good-fair condition, damages at borders of leaves.
