Greenberg, Uri Zvi. Mephisto. Warsaw: Literatur Fund, 1922. Second edition. Poem by Uri Zvi Greenberg which is one of his most important compositions in Yiddish. Cover designed by Wolf Weintraub, the font on the title-page designed by Greenberg himself. The author's portrait, by Henrik Barlevi.
Preceding the title page appears a long dedication spread on the whole page, handwritten by Uri Zvi Greenberg, in pencil. Attached is a letter from Prof. Dan Meron, editor of Uri Zvi Greenberg's writings, confirming that the dedication was handwritten by Greenberg. 85, [2] pp, 30.5 cm. Fair condition. Many stains and creases. First leaves and front cover are loose. Worn cardboard binding, attached with adhesive tape.

An important association copy: On the inside of the front cover is a handwritten dedication by the editor, the poet Uri Zvi Greenberg, to the artist Marc Schwartz, the illustrator of this issue.
A modernistic revolutionary essay by Uri Zvi Greenberg in this issue [Manifest to the Opponents to Modern Poetry] did not evade the eyes of the authorities, who reacted upon the appearance of the second issue by issuing an order prohibiting its publication and by confiscating all its copies. Following this incident, Greenberg left for Berlin, and from there moved to Eretz Israel in 1924 where he continued writing, in Hebrew. Cover design by Ze'ev (Vladislav) Weintraub. Includes linocuts by Marc Schwartz. 19 pp, 36 cm. Fair-good condition. Dry and fragile paper. Minor tears. Detached covers.

The cover design presents a unique typography, done by the artist Manuel (Emanuel) Shechtman (1900-1941) - a graphic designer, painter and theater-sets designer, student in Kiev's art academy, close to the literary circles in Kiev at the 1920s, and active in areas of culture and art. 47 pages, 22.5 cm.
