Mapu, Abraham. Handwritten letter. Kaunas, [ mid 19th century].
The letter was sent to Rabbi HaEfrati, describing the visit of "the Minister for the People's Education" and other government officials to the Jewish School for Boys in Kaunas, where Mapu served as a teacher. Mapu tells about the appreciation he received from the officials and from the governor of Kaunas, who invited him to his home. Mapu tells about those visits and about their conversations. Mapu (1808-1867), one of the Enlightenment writers in Lithuania, author of "Ahavat Zion" - first novel in Hebrew. 21 cm. Good-fair condition. Moisture-marks, folding-marks, minor tears.

Letter on a postcard with Sholem Aleichem's portrait and copy of his signature, printed by J. Hammermann. The entire letter is handwritten by Sholem Aleichem, with his typical signature and the writer's ink stamp from his residence in Lemberg. The addressee, Dr. Jacob Itzhak Niemirower -Jewish-Romanian theologist, philosopher and historian native of Galicia, served as the first chief rabbi of Romanian Jewry, member of the Romanian Senate until his last day and leader of Romanian Jewry for many years. Postcard 14x9 cm. Good condition, several stains.

Joseph Tunkel (1881-1949), official postcard, with a long letter in his handwriting, 1911. Yiddish.
The Jewish humorist and satirist Joseph Tunkel was known by his literary name "Der Tunkeler". He writes his biography on this postcard; from the day he was born in Babruysk in 1881, the move to Vilnius when he was 15, through publications in the paper "Der Yid" in 1901, and so on, until 1911. Postcard 14x9.5 cm. Good condition. Postal stamp missing.

Hartiner, Meir. "Diary Writings from Conquered Tarnopol". Handwritten diary. [Tarnopol, August 1914-April 1917].
Hartiner (1880-1972) - writer, translator and editor. Made aliya to Eretz Israel in 1938. Wrote for Hebrew and Yiddish papers and edited the paper "HaOlam". The diary was written in pencil and in pen, in very crowded handwriting, on hundreds of leaves bound together. In the diary Hartiner describes the daily hardships that Jews experienced in Tarnopol (Galicia) under the Russian and later Austrian conquest, during World War I. Attached are two letters from the period, written by Hartiner to his father, with descriptions of the wartime. [230] leaves, size of leaves varies. General condition good, with some stains and wear.

Menachem Mendel Ussishkin, letter in his handwriting and with his signature, apparently sent to Prof. Boris Schatz, founder of "Bezalel", on official stationery of the "Committee of the Society for Support of Bnei Yisrael Who Work the Land and Tradesmen in Syria and Eretz Israel". Odessa, 1910.
Ussishkin expresses his delight over the development of the Bezalel school, especially on "the founding of the new village", apparently he meant the Yemenite Artist Colony in Kerem Ben Shemen established by Prof. Schatz that year. He responds to Schatz' intention to travel to Yemen to bring Jews to Eretz Israel (to the colony?), and writes extensively on the necessity to purchase land and on other matters.
27 cm. Leaf written on both sides. Good condition, few stains and minor tears, folding marks and file holes.

At top of postcard, description handwritten by Ze'ev Jabotinsky, one of the brigade's founders: "On the 15th of Shvat, the 39th battalion strides in the direction of the Ben-Shemen colony, which suffered greatly in the Turkish-British battles, 1914-1918". The description is written in English, the words "the 15th of Shvat" are written in Hebrew. The 39th battalion of the Hebrew Brigade participated in battles on Jerusalem. 9x14 cm. good condition. Stains and creases.

In this long letter, Manger congratulates his friend who succeeded in escaping from "Dark" Romania, refers to the death of his brother during the war, the disappearance of Yiddish due to the extermination of Eastern European Jewry, and comments about various literary ideas. 5 pp, 20 cm. Good condition. Folding-marks, some writing is faded, minor tears, remnants of glue on the reverse of the first three leaves.
