Manuscript,"Copy of holy writings by the righteous holy Ga'on¦ Rabbi Yisrael the Maggid Meisharim of Koznitz¦ on the matter of liberation of an Agunah". [Manuscript, typical of c. 1860].
The following was said in my presence¦ to instruct to liberate the Aguna¦ and this I wrote to the leader of the Jewish nation, the famous righteous Ga'on Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, author of the Hafla'ah, Av Beit Din¦".
Discussion regarding the Agunah from Stasov, and reply to objecting rabbi. His words were not accurately printed in the book Agunat Yisrael by the Maggid. First leaf contains a passage of the response of the Maggid of Koznitz which was printed in the book Keter Kehuna by Rabbi Yitzchak Katz of Pintshov grandson of the Shach. (Leaf cut off in middle). Following leaves contain discussion with objecting rabbi who undermined the ruling of the Maggid of Koznitz as printed in the book Agunat Yisrael with slight changes in version. (This too, does not contain all the critique or the full version of the response).
In approximately 1801 a question was posed to the Maggid of Koznitz regarding an Agunah from the congregation of Stasov. The Maggid supported liberating her and sent his ruling to a number of the giants of the generation, including Rabbi Pinchas Horowitz author of the Hafla'ah Av Beit Din of Frankfurt am Main, Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margoliot and others, all of which joined in his decision. Rabbi Ezriel Horowitz, Rabbi of Lublin, objected to the ruling on a number of contentions and the Maggid wrote responses to these contentions which were printed in the pamphlet Divrei Rivot.
The Rebbe Rabbi Yisrael Hopstein - the holy Maggid of Koznitz (1736-1815), among the famous Hassidic giants, genius, halachic authority and sermonizer. Disciple of the Maggid of Mezeritch, Rabbi Shmelka of Nikolsburg and Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk. Served as Maggid in Koznitz for approximately fifty years from 1765. He became Rebbe in 1786 and he and the Chozeh of Lublin were regarded as the central figures of the Hassidic movement in Poland. Many books of ethics and Hassidism, Chidushei Shas and the book Agunas Yisrael on this matter which was first printed in Warsaw in 1880 were written on his words of Torah.
Approx. 20 pages, approx. 22 cm. Fair condition, tears in margins, some damaging text. Pages 2 and 3 missing from booklet.
