Rabbi Mordechai Shatz Rabbi of Swislovitz
Two biblical novellae notes (letter drafts) written by Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Printz. [Frankfurt am Main, 1896-1897].
Both letters deal with the topic of Shabbat Candle lighting. The first letter was sent to the Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Shatz, Rabbi of Swislovitz (Lithuania), whose answer to the present letter was published in the book “Parnass Le-Doro”, letter 83 (see enclosed material).
The second letter, which was crafted very sharply (“his letter is very important to me since it will be a proof that there is no repentance on this… and his honor isn’t among those who admit to the truth…”), was apparently sent to Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Brier or to Rabbi Reuven Fink, who had published polemical essays on the topic in “Der Israelit” journal, 1896. See “Parnass Le-Doro”, letter 145. (Material enclosed).
Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Printz, (1835-1915) of Amsterdam and Frankfurt, wealthy man, outstanding Torah scholar and public activist. His glosses were printed in the Vilna Shas. Constantly corresponded on Halachic matters with the leading sages of his generation. Bits of those correspondences were published in the book “Parnass Le-Doro” (Jerusalem, 1992). The present letters were not printed there and complete the printed material.
Five written pages, 22 cm. Dry paper, good-fair condition, light damage on the edges. The letters are not signed
