Noda Bi-Yehuda responsa, second volume, on the Even Ha-Ezer and the Choshen Mishpat, by Rabbi Yechezkel Ha-Levi Landau. Prague, 1776. First edition.
Dozens of lengthy, handwritten, scholarly glosses by two authors: some of them signed by “Betzalel”. Some were written by a different, earlier writer, whom Rabbi Betzalel refers to as “Ha-Rav Ha-Mesig” in his glosses. [In Rabbi Beltzalel Rensburg’s response, Ha-Rav Ha-Mesig is identified as Rabbi Leib Kocewicz (Rashowicz), head of the “Noda Bi-Yehuda” Beit Din]. These glosses were printed in “Rabbi Betzalel Rensburg’s Responsum and Innovative Commentaries” (Jerusalem, 1980), based on this copy. The author himself relates to some of those insights in his book “Noda Bi-Yehuda”, second edition, look further.
The great Rabbi Betzalel Rensburg (1762-1821), of the greatest Prague sages of his generation. Was among the Noda Bi-Yehuda’s disciples. In the introduction of his book “Horah Gever”, Rabbi Betzalel writes about his spiritual mentor: “Every Shabbat… I had to hear his words of Torah” and in his responsa, he refers to him as “the Greatest of the Acharonim”. Rabbi Betzalel sent some of his insights to his Rabbi, who responded to them in the second edition: “My dear friend, the exceptional young man… Rabbi Betzalel. Your words are good and your courage is great for having fought the Mesig and supported what I have written in the Noda Bi-Yehuda”.
The Gaon Rabbi Leib (Rashowicz) Kocewicz (passed away in 1782), was among Rabbi Yonatan Eibshitz’s disciples. Rabbi Yonatan Eibshitz was of the greatest Prague sages. He is mentioned many times in the “Noda Bi-Yehuda” as the “Head of our congregation’s Beit Din”. He was counted as one of Prague’s sages since 1748.
[1], 157 leaves, 34 cm. Good condition. Thick paper. Stains. Old and detached binding.
