Rebb Schloime Klappzymbels… von Johann Aduard Sack. Lemberg, 1814.
"Rabbi Schloime Klappzymbels, an accurate description of the Lemberg Jewry at the time of the peace celebrations, dedicated to his faithful friend Rabbi Hersch Shmeckpüdele, as memento for the feeling of happiness during the event" [names are fictional].
Booklet written in Antique Galician-Yiddish in Latin letters. At the bottom of each page are notes in Gothic letters which translate special Jewish and Polish terms.
The booklet includes description of the visit of the Austrian Kaiser in Lemberg from the point of view of the Jewish residents, including a Thanksgiving prayer in the synagogue for the signing of the peace treaty, a parade of the Cheder children and the Melamed, Klezmers, kinds of food served, the Keter Tora which was presented to the Kaiser, exact naming of the squares and streets, Doctor Rapoport who donated a portrait of the Kaiser to the community etc.
The visit of Kaiser Franz I in Lemberg was held following the defeat of Napoleon and the re-dividing of Europe in the Paris agreement. Part of this agreement included annexation of parts of Galicia to Austria.
An important description of an historical event in the life of the Jewish community.
