Two handwritten lines by R. Yaakov Ettlinger (lithograph) appear bellow the portrait with a quote from his introduction to his first book Bikurei Yaakov.
R. Yaakov Ettlinger (1789-1872, Otzar HaRabbanim 9805), Chief Rabbi of Altona and the surrounding region, a prominent leader of German Jewry and fierce opponent of the Reform Movement. He authored Aruch LaNer on Talmudic tractates, Bikurei Yaakov, Binyan Zion responsa, Minchat Ani on the Torah, and other books. Founder and editor of the Orthodox publication Shomer Zion HaNe'eman. Eminent German rabbis were among his disciples, including R. Samson Raphael Hirsch and R. Ezriel Hildesheimer.
