Lot 436

Letter from Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda Greenwald, Av Beit Din of Columbus

A letter on Torah matters, from Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda Greenwald of Columbus. 1951.
In his letter, sent to Rabbi Chaim Lerner (more about him on item 434), he speaks about a directive he had heard from the author of the “Arugat Habosem” about a chicken having two gall bladders.
At the end of the letter it is possible to notice his responsible attitude towards his role as Rav Posek in the United States. “All my time is taken for the sake of helping others, that’s why whoever can clarify the law on his own [should do so], it would be a pity to use up my precious time”.
The Gaon Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda Greenwald (1889-1951), was born in Sighet, learned with the greatest Torah scholars of his generation, published dozens of books dealing with Jewish Law and historical research on Hungarian Jewry. He was best known for his encyclopedic book called the “Kol Bo ‘al Aveilut”. He emigrated to the United States in 1924 and served as Rabbi in Brooklyn and Columbus.
