Ketubah on Parchment - Florence, 1895

Ketubah recording the marriage of the groom, Yehuda Shalom Eliyahu ben Shimshon Mitrani and the bride, Rivka bat Yosef Moscato. Florence, Nissan [1895].
Handwritten on parchment. The ketubah text mentions the notary who drew up the contract, "Notaro Carlo Cuirzzi". Witnesses' signatures: Rabbi Shmuel Zvi Margaliot, Av Beit Din, Mordecai Shmuel Masilyi, and another signature in Italian. Rabbi Shmuel Zvi Margaliot (Otzar HaRabanim 19628, 1848-1922) - born in Galicia, studied in Buchach with R. Shmuel Yissachar Stark, was ordained as rabbi by the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and earned a Ph.D. in philosophy and Semitic languages from the universities at Leipzig and Breslau in Germany. In the years 1887-1890 he served as rabbi of the Hesse Nassau community in Hamburg, Germany. In 1890 he moved to Florence, where he served as rabbi until his death. In 1899 he moved the Rome-based theological seminary (Collegio Rabbinico Italiano) to Florence. Originally the seminary was founded in Padua by Samuel David Luzzato.
