Photographs and Postcards - The Jewish Battalion
Eight photographs and two postcards of a soldier in the Jewish battalion. Palestine and Egypt, 1919-1921.
1-2. Two postcards published by "Mashiach", M. Eini, Cairo. One is printed with the portrait of Theodor Herzl surrounded by irises, beneath him a seven-branched menorah; the second is printed with a map of Palestine. 14X9 cm. Fair condition. Wear, creases and stains. Handwritten inscriptions. Second postcard stamped with post office stamp.
3-10. Eight photographs of a soldier in the Jewish battalion, in uniform, at a tent camp (Sarafand), on an outing (near Rachel's Tomb) and in a studio. One photograph is stamped with the stamp of photographer Zadok Bassan, with a dedication on the reverse: "While contemplating my appearance, recall that I was a soldier of the Hebrew army, sacrificing my time for an ideal" (Hebrew). Dedications and inscriptions in handwriting also appear on the reverse of most of the photographs. Size varies, 6.5X9 cm to 13.5X8.5 cm. Condition varies, fair to good.
