Interesting Collection of Letters – Independence War in Jerusalem, 1948
Interesting collection of letters which includes 38 letters and memorandums sent by Attorney Israel Diskin, a volunteer private in regiment 164, to security and national institutes during the War of Independence, December 1947 – October 1948.
Israel Diskin was born in Jerusalem in 1901. In 1931 served, temporarily, as secretary of Colonel Kisch; practiced law and even translated the "Letters of Pontius Pilate" into Hebrew; during the Independence War, at the age of 47, joined the army as a volunteer and served in Yemin Moshe and Mount Zion. Submitted memorandums to various committees concerning problems in Eretz Israel and their solutions.
Amongst the documents: • A plan to occupy all of West Eretz Israel in twelve to maximum 24 hours, December 31, 1947 (sent to the Security Dept. of the Jewish Agency). • A plan to bomb the Arab National Bank and the Commercial Center near Jaffa Gate, March 1948. • A plan to dig a tunnel under the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem to enable easy occupation of the city, July 1, 1948. • A plan to occupy Abu Gosh lands and retrieve the land of Menashe Eliashar in the neighborhood, April 4, 1948. • "Urgent and Confidential" letter to the Jewish National Council, regarding "proposal to transform a passengers' bus into an armored vehicle", December 8, 1947, and a proposal concerning better protection of trucks which serve the guards (after the killing of seven guards). • "Confidential and Urgent" letter to the commander of Regiment 67, about "tunnel under a straight road to Mount Zion or improvement of the present road", September 1948. • A plan to transform the "Burma Road" into a paved roadway, convenient for circulation of all kinds of light and heavy vehicles; and more documents.
