Medal Commemorating the Defeat of the Nazis in 1945 – Jewish Congregation of Milano
A medal issued by Italian Jewry, to commemorate the defeat of the Nazis and the survival of the Jewish people, 1945.
The medal was designed by the Italian sculptor Aurelio Mistruzzi. Obverse: A lightning bolt striking and splitting an axe bearing a swastika which is stuck in a broken tree, with a young tree growing in the background, surrounded by the inscription (in Latin, from Seneca): "Sequitur superbos ultor a tergo deus" ["The avenging god follows in the steps of the proud"]. Reverse: Menorah with the word 'Israel' in Hebrew, surrounded by the Latin inscription "Numquam exstinguetur" ["Never suppressed"].
Diameter: 30 mm. Hanger. Very good condition.
