Silver Synagogue Lamp – Egypt, 1944
Silver synagogue lamp, Egypt, 1944.
Engraved and punched silver.
At the top of this lamp is a hook attached to a “Hamsa” with an inscription in bold letters: "Ben Porat Yoseph". A half circle decoration attaches to the “Hamsa” with hooks for hanging three pendants (two are missing). The existing pendant is inscribed: "Shadai" and "Tzmarchad" – Kabalistic names for God. Three chains attach to the main circular dish. The center of the lamp is inscribed with a dedication: "To the ascent of the soul of the honored woman Clemantin Mizrachi, daughter of Katon dedicated to God, given to the Or Torah community". An additional inscription was added with the date of the death. Around the inscription: two Stars of David and a signature of "Chaim Cohen Tzaban" were added. The bottom of the lamp has a “Hamsa” with the inscriptions: "Shadai" and "Tzmarchad".
Length with the chain: 70 cm. The “Hamsa” at the top of the lamp is not original.
