Mattathias the Hasmonean – Ivory Figurine – Meir Gur-Aryeh

Ivory figurine sculpted by Meir Gur-Aryeh, "Bezalel", Jerusalem, [ca.1910]. Carved and engraved ivory. Marked: "M. Horodetzky". Mattathias the Hasmonean head, by Meir Gur-Aryeh. The miniature figurine presented is a copy of the original sculpture of Mattathias created by Boris Schatz. Mattathias head is a section of the sculpture "Mattathias the Hasmonean" created by Boris Shatz in Paris in 1894. This sculpture was lost. In 1903, while still in Sofia, Shatz created again the head of Mattathias in porcelain, 30 cm. high, and later, in Jerusalem, in stone. Height: 3 cm, width: 2.2 cm.
