Elef HaMagen – Salonika, 1828 – Oriental Glosses
Elef HaMagen, on the weekly Torah portions and homiletics, by Rabbi Eliezer Papo, author of “Pele Yo'etz”. Salonika, [1828]. First edition.
Owners' signatures: "G-d mercifully granted his young servant", "My father, the Crown of my head gave me this book as a gift… the young one…Avraham".
Dozens of glosses in Oriental handwriting are found on the books’ sheets [by one or more writers], some especially long, with nice hints in acronyms and gematri'ot. The writer mentions some of the men from whom he heard the thoughts written in the glosses: "I heard from Chacham Moshe", "My teacher, grandfather wrote…", "I heard from my father, my teacher", "From the writings Or Shraga", etc. At the top of one gloss he writes: "Beautifully said by Rabbi…" apparently directed atthe author of book Rabbi Eliezer Papo. Some glosses are signed: "The Young One A. Y. N. ", "Meir the Small One", etc. Written on one comment is "Shabbat night I remembered terrible happenings" (nora'ot - gematria hinting to the year 1903).
