“List of books by author of Chafetz Chaim” – Printed leaf with catalogue list of books by author of the" Chafetz Chaim", including a detailed explanation of the essence and objective of each composition. Radin, c. 1920.
Reverse side of leaf contains printed official letter by author of the Chafetz Chaim:
“With G-D’s help and mercy my books spread throughout the Jewish nation and they are necessary… to explain the Shulchan Aruch… or other necessary matters upon which man’s happiness is dependant. I cannot describe the extent of their necessity… in the past I sold the books through emissaries and now the railroads are not operating and it is impossible to travel – and the world isn’t able to obtain the books, therefore, I prepared a catalogue…”. Signed in print: “Yisrael Meir HaCohen”.
Margins of letter contain price chart, filled in by handwriting [with pencil], erasure and addition of word, possibly in the holy handwriting of the Chafetz Chaim.
It is well known that the custom of the Chofetz Chaim, prior to his becoming famous, was to wander from village to village and sell his compositions. This is an interesting document demonstrating the method of the Chafetz Chaim in distributing his books for the benefit of the public.
