Hartiner (1880-1972) - writer, translator and editor. Made aliya to Eretz Israel in 1938. Wrote for Hebrew and Yiddish papers and edited the paper "HaOlam". The diary was written in pencil and in pen, in very crowded handwriting, on hundreds of leaves bound together. In the diary Hartiner describes the daily hardships that Jews experienced in Tarnopol (Galicia) under the Russian and later Austrian conquest, during World War I. Attached are two letters from the period, written by Hartiner to his father, with descriptions of the wartime. [230] leaves, size of leaves varies. General condition good, with some stains and wear.
