Yavin Shemuah – Livorno, 1792 – Original Elegant Leather Binding with Dedication – Reward for a Student's Diligence from the Or Torah Society in Livorno

Yavin Shemuah, commentary on Halichot Olam by R. Yeshuah HaLevi, by R. Nissim Shlomo Algazi, and Talmudic principles by R. Yosef Karo. Livorno: Yaakov Nunez and Refael Meldola, [1792].


The book was given as a reward to a student for diligence in studying Talmudic principles, by the Or Torah society, apparently in Livorno.
Original elegant gilt-decorated leather binding, and original colorful endpaper. Gilt inscription on front of binding: "Reward for diligence in studying Talmudic principles", to "R. Avraham Binyamin Sananitz". Additional engraving on top of binding: "Or Torah Society" [a 1724 poem in honor of the Livorno Or Torah society is extant in manuscript in the National Library of Israel, former Valmadonna Collection, no. D45].


139, [5] leaves. 28.5 cm. Several leaves somewhat dark. Interior of book in good condition, binding in fair-good condition. Stains. Light worming to several leaves. Front binding and spine mostly detached. Wear and damage to binding (tears to spine and edges of binding).
