Avodat Yisrael, Chassidic and kabbalistic essays on the Torah portions, Haftarot and festivals; two letters; Chassidic commentary on Tractate Avot and novellae on Talmudic topics in Tractate Chullin, by R. Yisrael Hopstein – the Maggid of Kozhnitz. [Józefów: S. Wax, 1842]. First edition.
Avodat Yisrael is considered a classic Chassidic work, and was held in high esteem by prominent Chassidic leaders.
Signatures and handwritten inscriptions. Signatures on title page. Several ownership inscriptions and stamps of the Kosov Beit Midrash in Safed, and other stamps.
[3], 68, 71-90; 32 leaves. Originally printed with two title pages. Lacking first title page, and leaves 69-70 of first sequence. 20 cm. Fair condition. Stains, including dampstains. Wear. Large, marginal open tears to title page and open tears to other leaves, affecting border and text, repaired with paper (with photocopy and handwritten replacements). Some worming, slightly affecting text. Leaves trimmed with damage to headings in several places. Final leaves possibly supplied from a different copy. New leather binding.
Without leaf [5] comprising three approbations, which was not included in all copies (approbations which were brought to the printer after the printing of the book was completed).
