Torah Scroll on Gevil – Original Ornate Atzei Chaim – Morocco, 19th Century
Torah scroll. [Morocco, 19th century].
Ink on Gevil (soft texture, brown-hue), Sephardic scribal script. 48 lines per column. With the original wooden rollers (atzei chaim), carved with a geometric pattern and decorated in green and red. Silver rings, also decorated with geometric patterns, are attached to the top of the rollers. An inscription (in ink) on bottom of one roller reads: "This is the scroll of R. Yitzchak Gabai".
Height of membranes: approx. 53 cm. Maximum height including rollers: approx. 96 cm. Fair condition. Dark stains. Tears to membrane. Tears affecting text in several places. Late corrections to text. Two membranes were replaced at a later time (20th century?).
Enclosed: a report by an expert on ancient Torah scrolls, regarding the place and date of writing.
