The Works of Flavius Josephus. London: R. Penny, at Mr. Janeway's, [1733]. English. With second title page, dated 1732 (first title page, dated 1733, is missing).
The writings of Flavius Josephus including "Of the Antiquities of the Jews," "The Life of Flavius Josephus," "Of the Jewish War," "Against Apion," "Of the Maccabees," and other works. The book includes two folding maps – "A Map of the Holy Land," and a map of Jerusalem; and six plates (engravings; two of them folding) – a portrait of Flavius Josephus, "The Tower of Babylon," the Tabernacle and its elements and vessels, "The View of the Inside of the Temple of Solomon," the façade of "Solomon's Temple," and its elements and vessels. Three plates of engravings are missing.
An English translation of the Greek, after the Greek-Latin edition, Oxford, 1720, edited by Dr. John Hudson (1662-1719) [please refer to Item no. 69].
Appended at the end of the book: "A Critical Dissertation on the History of Flavius Josephus" by the French author François de La Mothe le Vayer (1588-1672); "A Supplement, Containing the Lives of the Herods," by the Danish theologian Christopher Noldius (1626-1683); explanatory notes and an index.
978, [45] pp. + [8] engraved plates (out of 11; three plates missing), approx. 34.5 cm. First title page missing. Good condition. Moderate browning to some leaves. Stains. Considerable worming (mostly to margins, rarely affecting text). Tears, mostly minor (one major tear to folding map of Jerusalem, and another tear, approx. 5 cm, to one engraved plate). First engraving restored. Several notations in margins. New binding, with leather spine, and new endpapers.
